Space and Lace: Sumptuary Legislation in England’s Theater culture during the 1600s
European sumptuary laws had influenced and monitored social structure both in the Theatre and society simultaneously. The Sumptuary and classist practices were part of a larger conversation about clothing that protected a social hierarchy through symbolic representation on stage and on the bodies of English citizens during the 1600s.
